The end is a bit of a mindscrew, but that's exactly what you're getting with Evangelion, too. The Ideon Sword that can cut entire plants in half and the Ideon Gun can destroy starships and planets as well. The Ideon eventually becomes a pivotal tool when it comes to humanity's ability to fight off the Buff Clan, especially when humans utilize its Black Hole Cannon, which can literally create black holes. Humanity decides it will have to cut its losses and board the ship, leaving behind the remains of an enormous mech they refer to as the Ideon.

Their “ark” is a vessel of mysterious origins: the Solo Ship. Space Runaway Ideon follows a group of colonists forced to flee Earth after being attacked by an alien civilization known as the Buff Clan.

Space Runaway Ideon, in its later episodes, blazes a similar trail to Evangelion - in fact, Evangelion creator Hideaki Anno was partly inspired by Ideon in the first place. There's talk of souls, the ego, and other heady concepts that Gundam usually doesn't tread. One of the most appealing aspects of Evangelion is its mysticism and refusal to adhere to strict mecha-anime storytelling. Genres: Drama, mecha, space opera, tragedy In a nutshell, that makes it perfect for Evangelion fans. The show’s bubblegum sweetness is interspersed with deep introspection, disturbing fates for some of the series’ regulars, and a darkness that surfaces periodically in the early going before rising up to overtake viewers like a terrifying, existential monster as the story progresses. When the girls discover several other magic users recruited by Kyubey, including Homura Akemi, they begin to question the Kyubey's motives and their purpose as magical girls – especially when the bitter truth about the "witches" they're fighting is revealed. In return, Kyubey will grant each of them a single wish. Madoka Kaname and best friend Sayaka Miki have a chance encounter with the impossibly adorable Kyubey, who beckons the girls with the promise of magical powers to defeat evil witches. Or at least that's what first-time viewers usually think, before they get a rude awakening. Streaming on: Netflix, Crunchyroll, Hulu, VRVĮvangelion looks like a straightforward mecha series, just like Puella Magi Madoka Magica looks like a sweet pastel magical girl adventure. Genres: Dark fantasy, magical girl, psychological thriller

It’s the perfect appetizer for the main course, and watching both series will likely help you appreciate both even more. RahXephon shares many of its core ideas with Evangelion, but takes the foundation laid by the iconic mecha hit and expands upon it in meaningful ways – and its creepy “Dolems” will give you nightmares.

Kamina is granted the ability to pilot a mecha-like suit (the Xephon), created to keep the human race from being eliminated in an event known as "tuning the world." Following 17-year-old Ayato Kamina as he grapples with a terrifying race of invaders, RahXephon is set in a reality on the precipice of being destroyed by horrific multi-dimensional invaders. The musically-focused RahXephon is one of the closest analogs to Evangelion released in the past couple of decades. It's also one of the best anime series of the last decade and won IGN’s Best Anime Series of 2018 award. The story that unfolds after soft-spoken Akira transforms into a "Devilman" - a human who can harness the powers of a devil while retaining his humanity - is a visceral rollercoaster ride, melding violence, sex, tragedy, and raw human emotion together in a cacophony of sight and sound. Like Evangelion, this anime is rife with disturbing sequences, but the story still has a surprising amount of heart. Devilman Crybaby is equal parts violent and heartbreaking, just as the two extremes in its title imply.
